Villard de Lans, Vercors

Villard de Lans is a charming mountain town in the heart of the Vercors Regional Nature Park, located at the foot of the Grande Moucherolle (2285m). Its central location in the Vercors, warm atmosphere, exceptional climate and its ski lift network have made Villard the largest destination in the Vercors thus providing you and your family a variety of hotel, restaurant and entertainment options for your GFNY race week experience.

The Vercors Regional Nature Park is an outdoors lover’s dream due to its natural features like tall limestone cliffs, deep gorges, caves, high plateaus, green valleys, mountain pastures, and great biodiversity of fauna and flora. The Vercors’ high cliffs from the massif dominate the valley below, providing awe-inspiring views.

Enjoy the cycling on the spectacular and daring roads of the Vercors! These stunning roads were cut out from the cliffside and the exceptional panoramas they offer have made the Vercors famous.

A popular outdoors destination that was awarded the Family Plus label, Villard de Lans offers a vast array of activities like hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, climbing and canyoning. During your Vercors visit, experience the vast spaces where nature and history combine, dive into the underground mysteries of caves, and discover the skills of local artisans and farmers for a trip that will make a lasting impression and a provide a sport highlight of your year.

Balcon de Villard, a resort located 5 km from the town of Villard de Lans, hosts the pre-race expo, the start and finish line of the race as well as the post-race festivities.

Long Course

GFNY Villard de Lans travels through the heart of the magnificent Vercors Natural Regional Park. Be ready to have your breath taken away by the stunning roads cut out of the cliffside, the imposing limestone escarpments, deep gorges, green valleys, mountain pastures and sweeping landscapes.

After a short neutralized descent from Balcon Villard Cote 2000 and a few hilly kilometers, you will take on the first climb of the day, Col de la Croix Perrin, with a summit at 1218m.

From km30, race on a flatter but not less challenging profile through the Gorges de la Bourne, with its impressive viewpoints and along its hilly road carved in the rock.

From there, about 50km of ascending profile until km85 and the small ski resort of Font d'Urle and its 1500m which will be the highlight of this course.

Enjoy the next 25km of descents on the most beautiful road of the Vercors, in direction of the Col de la Machine, famous for its layout carved right into the cliff, the Combe Laval road weaves its way through a grandiose circus, a titanic gash 4km deep that dominates the Royannais country.

There are countless tunnels through the rocks, peaks, viewpoints and dizzying lookouts, so take advantage of the view and recharge your batteries before the finale. Over the final 40km, you will cross a multitude of small tunnels cut in the rock in the direction of the demanding pass of Herbouilly and its summit at km144.

Only 13km remain for this final climb to Villard de Lans and its arrival which has seen several times a Tour de France arrival and prestigious victories such as that of Laurent Fignon or more recently in 2020 which saw the victory of a young German in solo.

The season of the cyclosportive mountain is launched, don't be mistaken, the course will be demanding but the sight of the mythical and indescribable landscapes of the Vercors will make you very quickly forget the challenges of this race course.

LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 20% of GFNY Europe Championship finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.

Medium Course

There are countless tunnels through the rocks, peaks, viewpoints and dizzying lookouts, so take advantage of the view and recharge your batteries before the finale. Over the final 40km, you will cross a multitude of small tunnels cut in the rock in the direction of the demanding pass of Herbouilly and its summit at km55.

From there, take on the final 13km climb to Villard de Lans, where you will celebrate your arrival.

MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.
